STEP Summer Research Experience: June 21 - July 31, 2009


During the S.T.E.P. Summer Research Experience, you'll develop critical research skills and the opportunity to acclimate to the city of Lincoln and UNL prior to beginning classes in Fall 2009. You'll learn how to: (1) work in a university research setting, (2) document research activities, (3) adapt in an academic environment, and (4) collaborate with other research participants and experienced faculty and graduate students.

Placement & Schedule

Selection of research projects will be based on the availability of labs in the College of Engineering. A 30-40 hour work week is expected; however, work schedules and space will be determined by the needs of the lab.

Program Dates: June 21 - July 31, 2009

  • Orientation will be held Sunday, June 21, at 5 p.m.
  • Lab assignments begin Monday, June 22.

Requirements

Students are required to gather for weekly brown bags with S.T.E.P. staff. Discussions at these brown bags will include: (1) research and academic success strategies, (2) progress of students in research program, (3) writing strategies and (4) presentation strategies.

At the end of this event, two deliverables will be required: (1) videography of summer research experience, (2) reflective paper on the experience of conducting engineering research, acclimating to UNL, and future education or research goals. Students will be provided guidance and expectations for these deliverables from S.T.E.P. staff throughout the summer research experience.

Research Supplies

All additional research materials will be paid for by S.T.E.P.

Program includes:

  • Stipend $2,000 (six weeks)
  • Free on-campus student housing (six weeks)
  • Interdisciplinary engineering experience

Requirements

  • Participating S.T.E.P. student (completed at least two S.T.E.P. courses at participating community college)
  • Admitted to UNL and enrolled for Fall 2009 (will take courses on the Lincoln Campus)
  • Admitted to the College of Engineering

  • Students who are selected must notify S.T.E.P. of their decision to participate by June 5.
