The Effective Teaming Laboratory: About Dr. Adams
Dr. Stephanie G. Adams is the Assistant Dean for Research in the College of Engineeringand an Associate Professor of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). She received her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Engineering from Texas A&M University in August of 1998. Her areas of concentration were Industrial Engineering and Management. Her research interests include Team Effectiveness, Collaborative and Active Learning, Engineering Education and Pedagogy, and Quality Control and Management. She has published a number of articles on the effective use of teams, as well as articles on issues related to mentoring students.
In 2003 she received the prestigious CAREER award from the National Science Foundation to support her goal of designing, developing and validating a model for the facilitation of effective teaming in the engineering classroom and for the enhancement of learning.
Dr. Adams is an honor graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where she earned her BS in Mechanical Engineering, in 1988. In 1991 she was awarded the Master of Engineering degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia.
A highly sought after speaker and workshop presenter. Dr. Adams is frequently invited to universities and communities to deliver technical lectures that share her enthusiasm about science and technology. Most recently she was a Plenary Session Speaker at the 10th Annual Compact for Diversity Conference, the Featured Speaker at the Annual Gates Millennia Scholars Leadership Conference and the Keynote Speaker at the 5th Annual Renewal Energy Academic Partnership Conference.
Previously, Dr. Adams served as the Director of the Advocates for Minority Engineering Student Success Program at North Carolina State University and the Minority Engineering Program Director at Texas Tech University. She also served as a Recruiter for National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM), at the University of Notre Dame. As an undergraduate and graduate student Dr. Adams interned with the 3M Corporation in Minnesota, New Jersey and California.
Dr. Adams is the recipient of numerous awards. In 2004 she was awarded the Holling Teaching/Advising/Mentoring Award by the College of Engineering at UNL; the Janice A. Lumpkin Educator of the Year, by the National Society of Black Engineers and the Chancellor's Fulfilling the Dream recipient. In 2003, she was awarded the Sue Tidball Award for Creative Humanity. In 2002 she received the Service Award for Assistant Professors in the College of Engineering. In 2001 she was selected as a Honorary member of Mortar Board and awarded the Henry Y. Kleinkauf Outstanding Assistant Professor in Teaching Award.
She is a member of the following organizations: Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE); National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE); American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE); American Society of Engineering Management (ASEM) and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Her hobbies include listening to music, playing golf, traveling and watching women's basketball.
