Alumni and Friends of the College:

The environment for engineering practice is increasingly more dynamic. Global accessibility to technology and technical experts, speed of innovation, and increased complexity of products and services are some of the factors that place demands on the education of new engineering graduates as well as practicing engineers.

The College of Engineering and Technology has a responsibility to the citizens of this state to meet the needs of this rapidly changing, global environment. The impact of these expectations cannot be taken lightly.

Across the state and nation, the demand for engineering graduates far outweighs the supply from our higher educational institutions. We must expand our capacity to produce high-quality graduates in engineering to help Nebraska’s future economy.

Many government and industry leaders in Nebraska view us as a very important partner in the state’s economic development. Studies have shown that the presence of a top engineering college is a strong factor in attracting and ensuring the success of high-tech industries. A top-tier engineering college provides companies with two vital ingredients for success: cutting-edge knowledge and smart labor.

A top-tier engineering college will help keep our best and brightest students here in Nebraska. A college that promotes learning and discovery among all its constituents attracts high-quality students. Graduates with technical knowledge and social and communications skills are among the best prepared for immediate and future engineering practice.

Our goal to be one of the nation’s top engineering colleges is not self-serving. It is necessary for Nebraska’s future economy. And what we do here impacts the region and the nation.

A number of planning initiatives are under way to map the future of the university and the college in this dynamic, knowledge-based economy. I am enthusiastic about the challenges and opportunities ahead of us all.
