With the leadership of the college’s External Advisory Board, the “2020 Plan” has been established to guide the development of the college for the rest of this decade. This plan is aimed at making the UNL College of Engineering one of the top 40 engineering institutions in the nation. The plan proposes the hiring of 11 new senior professors plus a considerable increase in support for graduate students. The board has pledged a gift of $5 million to jump-start the plan, and we are currently developing a differentiated tuition plan to provide the additional funding needed.

The college’s Strategic Planning Committee is at work to determine a hiring plan to identify the target areas for these new professor positions. These will be areas in which the college can achieve national recognition for excellence.

The first decade of this century was an especially productive one for this college. Our research funding increased from $12 million to more than $30 million and we saw a 50 percent increase in doctoral graduates. During this time the quality of undergraduate students entering the college continued to increase as well. With this excellent foundation and our new membership in the Big Ten, which will provide us many academic advantages and opportunities, we are well prepared to accomplish the vision of the 2020 Plan.
