College on the move
Over the past six years, the College of Engineering has continued to educate more students each year and has hired 48 new faculty members. Its annual research revenue is among the fastest growing in the entire region, nearly tripling to $25 million annually, and its 2020 goal is to reach an annual rate of $80-100 million per year to compete with other Big Ten Conference schools.
The college has made these great strides to advance engineering education at Nebraska.
The college’s teachers, researchers and students want to accomplish even more. Their goal is to become a consensus top 40 college of engineering, positioning Nebraska in the top 10 percent of all schools in the nation. In order to accomplish this goal, additional support is needed now more than ever before.
Campaign for Nebraska priorities
The College of Engineering and The Charles W. Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction have outlined a number of funding priorities through the Campaign for Nebraska. Support for this campaign will allow the college to build on its strengths and achieve its mission: to deliver relevant and challenging educational programs; conduct leading-edge research that advances engineering science and technology; extend exemplary engineering and technology service and transfer knowledge that contributes to the well-being and betterment of society.
Student Support—The college’s more than 3,000 engineering students are a vital resource and tomorrow’s leaders. Increasing support through scholarships and fellowships is a top priority. These resources are increasingly important to recruit and retain the brightest and most talented students who contribute to the vitality of the university and to the future success of all engineering professions. Another campaign goal is to ensure all students can have the opportunity to participate in some type of study abroad program, which will better prepare them to work competitively in the global economy.
Faculty Support—The merit of an educational institution is best measured by the quality of its faculty, who equip students with the skills they need to become critical thinkers and to succeed in their careers. Support for endowed professorships and chairs help the college recruit and retain preeminent teachers and researchers while enhancing the college’s research endeavors. In addition, the Campaign for Nebraska seeks to create endowed professorships for faculty within the college whose primary focus is on advancing teaching excellence and research through practical applications in the classroom, and, ultimately, the workforce. Additionally, support is needed for an endowed presidential chair to attract a top dean to lead the college’s 10-year growth initiative.
Program Development—Support is needed across the college for classroom and laboratory facilities to assist in maintaining high standards for technology and equipment, which is used to prepare students for a demanding industry.
General Support—Support is also targeted for other opportunities that have a great potential to advance the college and The Durham School as national leaders. The Nebraska Engineering Research Fund supports the important innovation and commercial potential continually produced at Nebraska. Support is also needed to help faculty endeavors in innovative research and engagement, professional and academic cultivation of students and for outreach to potential engineering students. Additionally, support is needed for student programs, including E-Week activities, internships and leadership programs to benefit students as emerging engineers in business and industry.
Possibilities to be involved
The possibilities for you to connect with the college are unlimited. Momentum has been building since the inception of the Campaign for Nebraska in 2005, but there is much yet to accomplish. Gifts at all levels help the college grow and advance engineering education at Nebraska. Permanently endowed funds and naming opportunities begin at $25,000, and gift commitments may be pledged and paid over time. Bequests are also a viable way for many donors to fulfill their charitable giving plans to benefit the university.
