Mechanical & Materials Engineering

Sweden/U.S. EMME Program

UNL Engineering Mechanics1:

The students in the program will have to complete at least 12 credits of regular coursework in EngM at UNL (a total of at least 15 credits, including thesis, must be completed at UNL). These 12 course work credits (at least seven of which must be earned in courses open exclusively to graduate students) will include:

  • EngM 910: Continuum Mechanics
  • EngM 996: Seminar in Engineering Mechanics

And any three courses from the following list2:

LTU Materials1:

The student in the program will have to complete a minimum of 60 ECTS 15 ECTS thesis work credits at LTU. These will include the following:

A minimum of 45 ECTS in regular technical courses from the following. These 45 ECTS will include:

  • T7001T - Deformation and Fracture (Vuorinen) 7,5 ECTS
  • T7008T - Phase Transformations (Vuorinen) 7,5 ECTS
  • T70012T - Composite Materials (Varna) 7,5 ECTS

And any three courses from the following list:

  • T7002T - Materials Modeling (Joffe) 7,5 ECTS
  • T7003T - Advanced Materials Char. Techniques (Lindbäck) 7,5 ECTS
  • T7004T- Surface Engineering (Vuorinen) 7,5 ECTS
  • T7005T - Aerospace Materials (Varna) 7,5 ECTS
  • T7006T - Nanostructured Materials and Nanotechnol. (Soldatov) 7,5 ECTS

Students starting their master at UNL and completing it at LTU may take up to 15 ECTS of master's thesis at UNL. Students starting their master's at LTU and completing it at UNL may take up to 15 ECTS of master's thesis at LTU.

Language requirements:

Students going from UNL to LTU are required to take at least 3 ECTS in Swedish language and culture.

Students entering the program are expected to be fluent in English at a level which will allow them to take courses and communicate in English.

Students for which English is not their native language when entering UNL will need to provide proof of English proficiency before admission and will be evaluated upon arrival at UNL and might be required to take additional English courses.

Students going from LTU to UNL will either take the TOEFL (or equivalent) or obtain a certificate from LTU indicating that they have successfully completed coursework completely delivered in English.

Resolution of Disputes:

In the event there is a dispute, the resolution of disputes will follow the procedures of the home institution of the degree program the dispute is in (e.g., UNL for Engineering Mechanics and LTU for Materials Engineering).
