University of Nebraska–Lincoln

Civil Engineering

A Department of the College of Engineering

The guarantee of quality education

Professors:

The foundation of a quality education is instruction from a qualified faculty which are comprised of regional experts awarded for teaching, advising and research. Students can draw on the expertise of faculty members at the Lincoln campus and the Peter Kiewit Institute in Omaha, both of which comprise the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Nebraska. Students are encouraged to participate in research activities at the undergraduate level adding yet another dimension to their abilities.

The University of Nebraska was recently recognized by the Association of American Colleges and Universities as one of only 16 institutions from throughout the country who are leaders in innovative undergraduate education. We were the only member of our peer group to attain this status and we stand with Michigan, Duke, SUNY-Stonybrook, and the University of Southern California as the only major research institutions to be recognized.

Facilities and Hands-On Learning:

The UNL CE Department has state of the art laboratory facilities to provide hands-on learning in the following areas:

  • Hydraulics
  • Structures
  • Soils
  • Transportation
  • Surveying

Other courses offered with integrated lab activities include:

  • Highway Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Mechanics of Materials

Research Centers:

The CE Department houses three centers of regional research and expertise:

  • The Mid-America Transportation Center conducts research and educational activities aimed at improving the design and operation of transportation facilities to maximize mobility, safety, and efficiency and minimize negative environmental effects of transportation in Mid-America. See www.matc.unl.edu
  • The Midwest Roadside Safety Facility conducts safety and performance evaluations of various roadside devices and develops innovative design concepts and technologies in the area of highway safety. Facility engineers are among the nation's leaders in developing and applying simulation models to design and analyze a wide variety of roadside safety features. See www.engr.unl.edu/~mwrsf/
  • National Bridge Research Organization develops, collects, and disseminates the latest technologies for the advancement of bridge design, construction, retrofit and maintenance. This is accomplished through partnership with industry, government agencies and academia to advance research, education and technology transfer. See http://www.NaBRO.unl.edu

Internships and Real World Experiences:

  • The Mid-America Transportation Center Summer Internship Program provides undergraduate students the opportunity to learn more about transportation engineering careers by working 13 40-hour weeks for a transportation engineering consulting firm or public transportation agency located in Lincoln or Omaha, Nebraska or Kansas City, Missouri. The program also includes an expense-paid field trip and recognition luncheon.
  • The Partners in Pollution Prevention Internship allows students interested in environmental engineering the opportunity to earn three hours of credit during the summer while providing assistance to business and industry. Students are given two weeks of training then assigned to a specific geographical location in Nebraska to provide companies with 8 weeks of technical assistance while being supported by UNL faculty, UNL graduate students, Extension Educators at UNL, and the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality personnel.

Student Interaction:

Engineering-related student organizations offer a multitude of opportunities for friendship, leadership experience and networking with professionals.
