Vision, Mission and Program Objectives
Our Vision:
The vision of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is to be a collegial and diverse organization, widely recognized as the most respected department in the Mid-Western United States, for its contributions to improve the civil infrastructure, and economic welfare of Nebraska and the nation, through research, education and service.Our Mission:
The mission of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nebraska is to provide a culturally diverse and intellectually stimulating environment for the discovery and application of knowledge in civil and environmental engineering, the education of our students to their fullest potential, and service to the public through outreach and professional activities. In particular, the mission involves:
- Providing the nation with a new generation of engineers that can meet challenges of the 21st century, in particular as related to civil infrastructure,
- Serving the State of Nebraska and the Nation by providing state-of-the-art expertise in civil engineering,
- Making important contributions in various areas of civil engineering by advancing the existing knowledge and developing new technologies.
- Facilitating the enrichment of the academic and professional experience of students, faculty and the engineering community.
- Providing outreach to the public and private sectors.
Our Goals:
To support its mission and vision, the Department of Civil Engineering has established the following five goals:
- Research - To excel in targeted and emerging areas of civil infrastructure research and to increase national and international visibility in those areas.
- Teaching - To attract high-quality students, prepare undergraduate students to be successful and educate graduate students to be leaders in their chosen fields.
- Partnership - To work as valued partners with outside constituencies within the State, Nation and internationally, in addressing societal problems and challenges related to civil infrastructure.
- Diversity - To broaden our diversity among students, faculty, and staff to include more women and under-represented minority faculty, domestic graduate students, and women and minority undergraduate students.
- Collegiality - To develop departmental collegiality, resources, community, and staff to support the achievement of goals 1 through 4.
General Educational Objectives:
The General Educational Objectives of the Civil Engineering undergraduate program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are to prepare our graduates to:
- Successfully obtain employment in their areas of expertise in the public or private sectors;
- Understand the ethical and professional demands of contemporary civil engineering practice;
- Successfully enroll in graduate engineering or other professional programs;
- Understand the necessity of teamwork in engineering practice;
- Be able to communicate effectively in professional settings;
- Understand and be able to account for the effects of their professional decisions on the quality of life and the environment;
- Successfully pursue professional licensure, and
- Continue to seek further education in a process of life-long learning.
