Requirements for Honors Students - Lincoln
Civil Engineering students who are in the UNL honors program must fulfill the following requirements to graduate with honors:
- Cumulative GPA: 3.5
Complete 24 credit hours in honors courses with a grade of B or better: to include 189H, 395H, and the thesis. A B- grade in an Honors class will earn academic credit but will not satisfy Honors Program course requirements. The hours should be completed as follows:
First Year: Complete at least 6 honors credit hours with a grade of B or better. A student must complete the required 189H class (three credit hours) and at least one other Honors class for a minimum of three more Honors credit hours in this academic year. Common honors courses, beyond 189H, selected by CIVE majors include Math 107H, Math 208H, CIVE 221H, Phys 221H, and EM 223H.
Second Year: Complete at least 6 honors credit hours with a grade of B or better during the second year. This is for a total of at least 15 Honors hours by the end of the 4th semester. Common honors courses selected by CIVE majors include Math 221H, EM 325H, EM 373H, Phys 212H, and JGEN 200H. Honors sections are not offered every semester for some courses. In addition, all honors students must file a statement of academic interest with the Honors Program office by the end of the second year.
Third and Fourth Years: Complete the remaining hours required to reach 24 hours. Common honors courses selected by CIVE majors include CIVE 310H, CIVE 326H, CIVE 352H, CIVE 495H and a Soc-Hum elective that is a 395H. In a few cases, students will also work with a faculty member to take a non-honors class for honors credit via an honors contract; for more information see: http://honors.unl.edu/html/cur_contracting.html. The 395H classes normally count as H&S electives in engineering. Check Dr. Ballard's advising website to see which H&S area a particular 395H classes falls under.

Honors Thesis/Project. CIVE 495H can count as your honors thesis. If this is to be done, arrangements need to made, so that the Honors Program receives a copy of the 495H project report in which the honors portion of the project is clearly identified. The Honors Memo (.pdf) gives an explanation of how to fill out the Honors Memorandum of Study Form (.pdf) if taking CIVE 495 H. Alternatively, some CIVE honors students choose to write an honors thesis and register for CIVE 499H. If you take the thesis route, 18 to 24 months before graduation select a topic and the appropriate faculty member and ask him/her to serve as your research advisor. Presumably, this person will be someone with whom you have had a class or two, with whom you know you will work well. Working with this advisor, you will define the nature and scope of the thesis. Strongly consider applying for a UCARE grant to support your research work; you can be paid to work on your thesis. A copy of your honors thesis must be given to the Honors Program prior to graduation. Depending on your plans for Technical Electives, CIVE 499H may be used as a Technical Elective in CIVE.
The honors requirements are explained in more detail on the honors program web site: http://honors.unl.edu/. Further clarification of the requirements can be obtained from the Honors Office at 472-5425.
