Preparing Innovative Leaders for Tomorrow

EEW

Engineering Exploration Week (EEW) Junior High Program:

Jr. High EEW is a one-week day camp comprised of mini-workshops for students entering grades 8 and 9. The camp will be hosted at The Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI), where participating students will have the opportunity to explore engineering programs available on the college's Omaha Campus.

The workshops will be held July 13-17, 2009. Lunch will be provided at all sessions.

If you have a passion for science and math, join us for fun activities that will give you a better understanding of the many facets of engineering.

Program Fee: $175

EEW Workshop Descriptions:

Architectural Engineering: If These Walls Could Speak

Monday, July 13
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Have you ever wondered what happens once a building is designed? Your questions will be answered in this fun, interactive workshop where you will explore how the mechanical, acoustic, electrical, lighting and structural building components come together when designing a building.

Civil Engineering: Let's get CIVILized!

Tuesday, July 14
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Civil engineering is the art and science of designing the infrastructure that make up a CIVILized society. This infrastructure includes: highways, buildings, railways, bridges, airports, tunnels and water reservoirs. Civil engineers design structures that meet the needs of growing populations while protecting the environment, reducing the dangers from natural hazards like earthquakes, and considering future needs of the community. Come join us in learning how cool it is to be a civil engineer!

Construction Engineering & Construction Management: Building a Bridge to the Future

Wednesday, July 15
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Construction Engineering and Construction Management are growing occupations that incorporate the skills necessary to design and/or manage multi-million dollar projects. These skills provide you the opportunity to travel the country and the world. In this session, you will learn the basics of construction project management, such as working on teams, and construction engineering as it relates to building structures. We will divide into teams and build a bridge using K'nex, which we'll test to see how much weight it can hold. Most importantly, we'll have fun!

Computer & Electronics Engineering: Fun with Robotics and Art

Thursday, July 16
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Do you like to design, create and invent? Do you want to learn how to bring your own 3-D designs and creations to life using technology? If so, come explore, create and design in the Pico-crickets workshop! You will use your imagination to create playful inventions that combine technology and art! You will learn how to combine electrical and artistic components to create a design, then program your invention using a computer so it responds to light, sounds and touch! Create musical sculptures, futuristic amusement rides, animals that move, and models of just about anything you can dream up in the Pico-crickets workshop!

Fabulous Fun Day

Friday, July 17
9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Plan to enjoy a presentation by CAPOW!, a science show of pops, bangs and flashes. In addition to CAPOW!, students will meet with Raytheon engineers to find out why it's cool to be a "techie." Students will also learn what it takes to prepare for an engineering education. Parents are invited to lunch in PKI at 12:30 p.m., where students will be recognized for their participation.
